Walking meditation is really to enjoy the walking – walking not in order to arrive, but just to walk. The purpose is to be in the present moment and, aware of our breathing and our walking, to enjoy each step. Therefore we have to shake off all worries and anxieties, not thinking of the future, not thinking of the past, just enjoying the present moment. -Thich Nhat Hanh Peace Is Every Step
This is one of my favorite passages from the book Peace Is Every Step. It’s a wonderful reminder for me to take a walk without a plan.
Step out the door without any destination in mind. Walk at a slow pace. Coordinate my breathes with my steps. Breathe in and breathe out. Appreciate all the breathes. Life is in the present moment. Think only of the breathes and steps. Find a rhythm. Enjoy each step. Walk fully in each moment with gratitude. Let go of any thoughts not in the present. Feel calm.
This meditation teaches me that when I find calm I am now walking in the spirit of peace and serenity.
“If you feel happy, peaceful, and joyful while you are walking, you are practicing correctly.” Thich Nhat Hanh
