you’ve just crossed over into…the walk only zone

Imagine if you will, a dimension for walkers only, “it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge”, it is an area which we call the Walk Only Zone!

Thank you Rod Serling for that attention getting intro!

A nifty new sign I’ve noticed this summer in and around city centers is the walk only sign.

Walk only zones are places that have been created so that pedestrians can feel safe walking. The zone bans anything with wheels – skateboards, wheelies, bikes, inline skates etc. while encouraging foot traffic.

Acknowledging that we live in a society in which the transportation options seem to grow overnight, this designation can be very helpful in heavily trafficked areas. Identifying lanes gives walkers, segway-ists, boarders, cyclists, ‘bladers, golf carts, electric scooters, landscape vehicles, (sheesh! who knew? and the list goes on) direction when navigating in and through public places.

The walk only zone is an encouraging start for those of us serious about putting on a comfortable pair of shoes and venturing forth to explore our world. It’s comforting to know that anyone who is concerned about climate change, the hole in the ozone layer, and the future of penguins on the planet can now feel safe and supported when they choose to ditch the car and walk about the urban centers of our neighborhoods.

Yes, we’re traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That’s the signpost up ahead – our next stop, the Walk Only Zone!
